Daily Show hits it out of the park

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Two segments from last night’s show are priceless.

I always had the feeling that Sarah Palin wasn’t exactly the sharpest marble in the bag, but this is a little horrifying.

It Stuck!

Obama (apparently) still wins!

House and Senate went Democratic, too.

Wow. Not a great day to be a Republican.

…and how lucky is Joe Biden?! He won both his re-election bid as the Senator from Delaware, and as Vice President… Can he be both, or must he choose?!

Well… In two and a half months… and some more… we’ll start to get a picture of whether Barack Obama is a real human with a conscience and a memory, or just another lawyer-turned-politician (since, in their world, truth is merely a perception of presented facts (or other truths), and their job is to bend and shape “the truth” to their advantage… they go to school for a long time to be able to do that)

Don’t get me wrong… What I’ve seen of Obama makes me think he’s a nice guy, and isn’t out to do anyone over… but that may just be the “truth”, as opposed to a fact. Now we wait and watch, I guess.

Guilt by Association: McCain Takes a Shot in the Pills

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Well, it’s 11:10PM on November 4, 2008, and NBC, NPR, CNN and various other sites are calling the election for Barack Obama.

Holy crap… McCain has already conceded!

Electorally, McCain got spanked. The popular vote was decidedly closer, but still fairly decisive as of now.

Between his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate and his extended (and strangely borderline sycophantic) cooperation with George W. Bush (remember him?), I think McCain has been hoist by his own petard.

…and then there’s McCain’s concession speech… or more importantly, the pointless and irritating chanting of the pitchfork-wielding mob he was addressing. McCain was graceful and conciliatory in defeat, but his supporters sounded a more than a little frightening.

All in all, with the condition the country is in, with the failing wars, the selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate, and McCain’s pledge to continue essentially all of Bush’s policies, there was no way he could have won.

Let’s see if this holds til the morning ;)

It’s election day. Whee.

Those of you, who, like me, don’t watch TV may be interested in some resources for monitoring the election…

Well, of course, you can listen to the radio.

You can also listen to NPR on-line - Find a station here.

NPR’s online election coverage can be found here.

Here’s a couple online electoral map sites: 270towim and electoral-vote

Here’s CNN’s election coverage

That should get you started… of course, you can also check out MSNBC, the websites of the “3 major networks”… and… if you’re rooting for John McCain, you might want to see the FoxNews website.

So far there appears to be an Obama lead of between 10 and 30 electoral votes based on aggregated polling.

Here’s what I’ve seen, regarding the Democratic and Republican candidates:

McCain seems to have drunk the Kool-Aid. Bush-flavored.
Palin is a crackpot. Wow.
Obama seems to be (comparatively) consistent with his own message, and that message doesn’t really scare me. Much.
Biden seems to like the taste of his own feet.
McCain seems to be unable to settle on whether Obama is is a nice guy, or the worst thing to happen to America since Herbert Hoover.
Palin seems perfectly comfortable stopping just short of explicitly stating that Obama is a Muslim terrorist.
Obama is capable of forming complete sentences.
Biden is from Scranton, PA, and rides the train to work.
McCain seems not to understand computers, the Internet and the issues they raise in modern society.
Palin is a teleprompter junkie, and can’t stay on-message (or speak in sentences) without it.
Obama is comparatively youthful, intelligent, logical and self-consistent.
Biden is a little creepy when it comes to the “post-9/11 mindset” angle.
McCain, if elected, would be the oldest man to take the oath of office for the US Presidency for the first time (might I add he’s not in the best of health - It’s been pretty thoroughly revealed that he’s had surgically mitigated cancer at least once).
Palin could very well be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Given her positions on guns, gods, war, and the economy, she’s actually scarier than George W. Bush - possibly scarier than Dick Cheney.
Obama is apparently relatively healthy and competent.
Biden, despite his gaffes, seems to be marginally lucid, and would be a far better pick to take up the mantle of the presidency in the event something happened to his presidential candidate.
McCain, at the age of 52 decided it would be sensible to have a second child with his second wife (18 years his junior), then adopted another child at the age of 55. Does anybody need 7 children?
Palin, at the age of 44 thought it would be a great idea to have another child… Trig, who, it turned out, has Down syndrome. Couldn’t have predicted that, eh? You need 5 children, don’t you?
Obama has 2 children, and seems to be done.
Biden is 65 and has 3 surviving children. He also seems to be done.

All things considered, I think the Obama-Biden ticket is the best hope for both the country and the people who populate it. Your mileage may vary.
