Thanks, asshat

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Some knownothing shitheel broke into my Rav and made off with my 3 year old tomtom. Idiot. Like it’s worth something on the black market. I don’t even think you can get firmware updates for it anymore. What’s worse is that it happened in my own driveway. So, now I’m waiting for a cop to show up so I can file a report. So, thanks to this numbnuts, I get to waste a perfect kayaking day. Even if I wasn’t going to file a police report, I’d still be cleaning glass out of the car for the better part of the day… And I get to waste tomorrow shopping around for a replacement window.

Shit

Google Wave.

Friday, May 29th, 2009

While Microsoft was off reinventing the search wheel (in much the same fashion as it reinvented the portable music player wheel, by adding angles and unnecessary jangly bits), Google was off in Australia doing the foundational work for Google Wave.

The Rasmussen brothers, who brought us Google Maps, are heading up the dev team on Wave, and it looks spectacular.

There’s a demo video at wave.google.com. It’s about an hour and a half long… so… you kind of have to commit some time to it, but… it’s really spiffy. It’s a collaboration tool that seems to have almost boundless potential.

Take a little time and watch the video. It’s bitchin’!

The American Auto Industry… Myth?

Monday, May 18th, 2009

As you may be aware, Ford GM and Chrysler have been manufacturing cars in Canada and Mexico for the US market, and calling them American cars. They can do that, because the name of this country is “The United States of America”, and America is a reference to the continent, on which the country is situated. Canada and Mexico are also American countries. For years, GM has been bringing components in from plants (both GM-owned, and third-party-owned) in Eastern Europe, Korea, and Australia (among other places) for final assembly in “America”.

GM is an “American” car company… which owns (or owned until recently) SAAB, a Swedish car company… does that make SAAB an American brand? Certainly, SAAB, in the US market, also marketed a rebadged Chevy TrailBlazer and a rhioplastied Subaru Impreza wagon as “SAAB cars”… thought to be Swedish…. Owned by GM, based in Detroit.

And Detroit isn’t even that important in the US auto industry. Hasn’t been for years. US-Brand auto plants are scattered all over the continent… Sure, the headquarters are in or near Detroit, but that’s not where all the “precious jobs” are. They’re in Georgia and Texas… Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee… New York, Indiana, Illinois… they’re everywhere. I guarantee you that was more of a political move than anything else. It allowed the various car makers to put legislative pressure on the bulk of the House, if not the Senate. “If you don’t play ball with us, we’ll have to close our plant in Whoville, and that’ll mean 5,000 lost jobs in your district. Wouldn’t that be a shame…?”

Of course, the major Japanese manufactures have been building cars in the US since at least the ’80s. Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Mazda all have plants on US soil (Most are independent; some are “partner plants” with one of the “big three”). Is that phenomenon part of the “American Auto Industry”? Nope. Why is that?

How is it that a Saturn ION, made from parts manufactured all over the world (including Eastern Europe), and final-assembled in Spring Hill, Tennessee is any more “American” than a Toyota Camry, made from parts manufactured all over the world (mostly Japan), and final-assembled in Lexington, Kentucky? Is it that the Saturn plant is a union plant, and the Toyota plant isn’t? What difference does that make, if the workers are satisfied?

I guess this is the issue for me: GM (like so many other mega-corporations) has become so big, and so entrenched, as to become something of a symbiotic parasite. If you’ve got this parasite, it will eventually kill you, but to remove it will kill you immediately. GM going down… all the way down… doesn’t just impact the US economy… GM also operates in Europe, Asia and South America. Other global brands include Vauxhall, Opel and Holden. If GM actually disappears, there will be an immediate problem… BUT… GM is not the only (or best) player in any market. Europe has Daimler-Benz, BMW, VW, FIAT, Renault and others. I’m sure the Australasian market will find a way to survive. The thing is that the other manufacturers will have to pick up the slack, and it may be a little uncomfortable at first… but certainly not as uncomfortable as actually acquiring another company… think of it as an acquisition of marketshare, without the acquisition of all the legacy overhead (union contracts, bad practices and so on).

The car business is evolving, and GM is being selected against, naturally. Natural market forces are killing GM. Let it die. It doesn’t have the traits needed to survive, and it has a number of traits that are likely to kill it, sooner or later. Let it die. Don’t prolong its miserable life any more, and certainly not on the backs of taxpayers.

STS-125 — Finally off the ground!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Back in October, I was in Florida on my Vision Quest. The STS-125 mission, scheduled for launch in October, was delayed. While I was visiting the Kennedy Space Center, I got to see something fairly unusual: 2 Space Shuttle stacks poised for launch at the same time. That launch didn’t happen, because something funky happened on the Hubble, that the mission planners had to compensate for… I don’t remember what that something was.. but… anyway….

So, there I was , in the middle of taking a month off of work, and, among other things, reassessing my life.

Now, as my time with my current employer winds down, STS-125 has actually lifted off, and is scheduled to return to Earth on my last day of work.

Kind of poetic….

Shoot this down or suffer the consequences!

HR 888, a.k.a. “America’s Spiritual Heritage” resolution, must be stopped! Call and/or write your representative now!

Here’s my email to Rep. Jim Langevin:

Dear Rep. Langevin,

HR 888 (also known as the “America’s Spiritual Heritage” resolution) is a threat to one of the most cherished and fundamental liberties guaranteed by the US Constitution.

As my Representative, sworn to support and protect the Constitution, you must vote to strike down HR 888 (also known as the “America’s Spiritual Heritage” resolution), as it seeks to codify a respect for religion (a single religion, no less) in Federal Law. This is so offensive as to be viscerally sick-making.

With all due respect to you and your beliefs, whatever they may be, please recognize that the founding documents of this country do not establish it as a Christian nation, but as a secular nation, with some vague nods to an unspecified deity.

Strict literal interpretation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution, and your oath to support and defend it compel you to vote with prejudice against this heinous travesty of worthwhile legislation.

Thank you for your time, and best wishes,

Paul Tourville

Again with the miracles.

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

This story, presented by WHDH-HDTV, which, from what I’ve heard, is one of the largest and most respected TV news organizations in the region… What do I know? I haven’t watched any appreciable terrestrial broadcast TV in over 10 years…. anyway… that story raises a pet peeve of mine. The story starts with the following sentence:

A man who never thought he would walk again is walking proof that miracles really do happen.

Are you kidding me?! I mean the article gets much, much worse… grammatically, factually… real-world-ily.

If you were not already hip… this blog post I wrote back in 2006 should give you an idea of my feelings on the reporting of miracles in the media, and miracles in general. This one may also shed some light on my feelings.

I decided to write the TV station:

To whom it may concern:

Your piece about the Marshfield man, whose recovery may be ruled a miracle, troubles me.

The story talks about miracles as if they were common, matter-of-fact elements of reality, like death, taxes, and baseball.

There is a significant discrepancy between the web story, and the “related video”, in that the web story states flatly that John Sullivan is “walking proof that miracles really do happen.” That is, to put it mildly, a wildly extraordinary claim, made by WHDH. The video story says that he “… says he is living proof that miracles happen.” That is also a wildly extraordinary claim, but one made by the subject of the story, not your writers. The video is not without its flaws, however. The graphic that shares the screen with the anchor during the story’s lead-in says “MIRACLES HAPPEN”. Do you have any evidence to back up this wildly extraordinary claim?

I refer you to this blog post of mine for my position on miracles:
http://www.ursuspacificus.net/blog/index.php/2008/04/20/its-a-miracle/

You may also find this enlightening:
http://www.ursuspacificus.net/blog/index.php/2009/01/17/miracle-on-the-hudson-my-foot/

This also touches, tangentially, on miracles and the news media:
http://www.ursuspacificus.net/blog/index.php/2008/04/20/taking-cartoons-too-seriously/

Your story is chock full of undefined references and rhetorical dead ends. It is nearly unreadable, and certainly unbelievable. Here are some examples:

“A man who never thought he would walk again is walking proof that miracles really do happen.” — There is no effort made to validate this claim.

“Several of John Sullivan’s vertebrae were squeezing his spinal cord and discs, bulging out and causing debilitating pain.” — Vertebrae are bone, and do not bulge.

Who is/was Cardinal John Henry Newman, and why pray to him? Why not pray to Joe Pesce?

“Sullivan eventually did go through with the operation, but it yielded major complications.” — Complications, such as… success?

“He has never felt the pain again.” — Objection: Hearsay.

“Sullivan sent a petition to England - notifying the postulator of a divine favor …” A petition?… like canvassing door to door, getting signatures? …and England? How does England play into this? Did he send it to … Parliament? Michael Palin? Richard Branson?

…and this, the last “sentence” of the piece, I have to say, is the capper (and I QUOTE): “The Pope is now expected to say Sullivan a miracle, after his severe spinal trouble healed in a way that mystified his doctor” OK, first, let’s wedge the word, “that” between “say” and “Sullivan”. Then, let’s make “Sullivan” possessive… “Sullivan’s”… better… now, insert “recovery is” between “Sullivan’s” and “a miracle”. Oh-kaaayyy… replace “after” with “given that”. After “doctor”, put “,whom we didn’t bother to interview for this story”. Finally, put a PERIOD. This makes the last sentence:

“The Pope is now expected to say that Sullivan’s recovery is a miracle, given that his severe spinal trouble healed in a way that mystified his doctor, whom we didn’t bother to interview for this story.”

…Wow.

Sincerely,

Paul Tourville
