Hey! You can get cool kayaking-themed shirts and other gear at the KitschKave!

I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to arrange the Kayak Kave on this site.

You can check out the old page here: http://www.ursuspacificus.net/julio/kayak_kave.shtml

Paul’s Fleet

Walden Vista

Me on Gorton Pond, in Niantic, CT

Purchased in Summer 2003

I put a fair number of miles on this boat. It’s light, and turns on a dime. The seat is not all that comfortable… I could have gotten one of those gel “tractor seat” pads, but… I never did. The Vista just doesn’t track all that great, and it’s not really up to long paddles. It’s good as a spare boat, or as a boat to lend to friends who want to try kayaking out, but don’t want to go alone. For the kind of paddling I like to do most of the time, tho, I basically outgrew the Vista.

Prijon Touryak

Purchased in Winter 2003

The Touryak is a real workhorse boat. Tough, stable, tracks and glides pretty well for a plastic boat. At 15.5′, tho, it’s still a little fat for its length. The high-volume cockpit is nice, and the “gas pedal”-style rudder controls are sweet. This boat is comparatively light to carry for its size (at about 55 pounds) but feels a little heavy in the water. Good cargo capacity, reasonable speed and nifty self-rescue paddle-straps behind the cockpit make this a great boat to go swimming from. I put a cleat and chock on it in 2005, and got a little 3-pound collapsible anchor. It’s a fun boat, but after 14 or so miles, you defintitely know you’ve been paddling for a while ;) It’s hard to say for sure, but I’d bet I’ve put at least a thousand miles on this boat. I do know I put 425 on the first year I had it ;)

After demoing this boat for what seems like an enternity, I can’t wait to get it out on the water for real!
